NUTS! follows the captivating story of Dr. John Romulus Brinkley, a man who used his con-artistry and charm to make millions off of anyone who would believe him. This film focuses on the life of Dr. Brinkley and how he built a business empire based on the claim that he had found the cure to male impotency through the surgical implantation of goat testicles. NUTS! follows the many bizarre twists and turns of his life, from his pioneering role in the early days of radio to his forays into politics.
Using beautiful hand-drawn animations, innovative editing, and intimate narrative techniques, director Penny Lane creates a memorable approach to a unique story about quackery, lies, and the power
of the tale. With a stoic narration by Gene Tognacci, carefully constructed collage, and imaginative animations, this film provides an entertaining and engaging investigation into why we believe the things we do—and how far we will go when we chose to believe in what we hear.
NUTS! is Lane’s second feature documentary film, and made its world premiere at Sundance earlier this year, winning the Sundance U.S. Documentary Special Jury Award for Editing and the Best Editing Award at Ashland Independent Film Festival. (Margaret Rorison)Director Bio
