Paul (Johnny Galecki) has been in a bit of of an emotional rut ever since his fiancé left
him. Carrying around a long face and a schlubby demeanor, Paul has trouble connecting with new folks and his increasing isolation and depression have him looking for help. When he comes across
an ad for a self-help retreat founded by guru Ken Roberts (Oliver Platt), Paul decides to check it out. After attending an information session, Paul commits to heading off to a cleansing retreat in a rural summer-camp setting. Having taken notice of Maggie (Anna Friel) during the information session, Paul commits, in part because he hopes to see her at the retreat.

Upon his arrival, Paul is delighted to see that Maggie is indeed there. After being greeted by camp head Lily (Anjelica Huston), he receives his personalized cleansing kit and begins cleansing his body in order that he might cleanse his mind. The disgusting mystery “juice” concocted for each camper is a special blend unique to their cleansing needs, but each one has the same overwhelming purging effect. After an exhaustive full-body purge, Paul, Maggie, and the other campers discover that toxins and emotional baggage aren’t the only things they’re letting go of. All those unhappy feelings gnawing at their respective guts may just take on a life of their own once they’re released.

Director Bobby Miller’s The Master Cleanse is incredibly well-crafted from direction, editing, and photography right down to the impressive special effects. Infused with dark comedy and midnight- movie swagger (reminiscent of midnight classics such as Frank Henenlotter’s Basket Case) this excellent first feature from Miller manages to be both fun and affecting.
